In Sanskrit Language the word ‘Anna’ means food /grains and ‘Purna’ means full or complete. The name Annapoorneshwari means "Feeding one and all".
Mata Annapoorneshwari is the Divine mother of the universe – goddess of food; an incarnation of goddess Parvati. She not only gives food and riches to her children, but also takes care of their spiritual emancipation by bestowing the nectar of Atma Gnana - the knowledge of the self.
Mata Sri Annapoorneshwari Devi is depicted with a jeweled vessel containing food in one hand and a spoon in the other to distribute the food to her devotees. The Sri Annapurna Ashtakam composed by Shankaracharya is devoted to this goddess.
Anna Prasad Kshetras (Temples of Mata Annapoorneshwari) were everywhere in our ancient Vedic times.
It was believed that by worshipping this goddess one will never be out of food anytime in life. Every Grihastha (house holder) would not touch his meal unless he has fed students, travelers or other lonely/hungry persons in the village. A girl when got married was given an idol of Mata Annapoorneshwari by her mother as a blessing; as she is considered none other than the Ma Annapoorneshwari for her family taking responsibility of feeding her family nourishing food.
While there is enough food for everyone in the world the distribution gets imbalanced because of greed. If those who have more make sure that no one is left hungry around then every house can be an Anna Prasad Kshetra. Abundance can be seen everywhere.
A society where every house is a temple of Mata Annapoorneshwari not a soul is left hungry. It is a very rich society. But a society where food is sold for greed decays.
